The UK recognises that couples who are in genuine, long-term and loving relationship may not wish to get legally married for a number of personal reasons. The unmarried partner route is designed for peope in those circumstances.

 

In order to qualify, applicants will need to meet a number of regulatory requirements before submitting an application to the British Embassy in their native country or the UK Visas and Immigration office (UKVI) . Some of the application requirements are as follows. 

  • Both the applicant and UK citizen must be over 18 years of age.
  • The applicant must demonstrate to the the immigration authorities that the UK citizen will live and be settled in the UK or, be returning to settle in the UK at the time of application.
  • The applicant must demonstrate to the immigration authorities that they intend to live together in the same home as a co-habiting couple.
  • The applicant must demonstrate to the immigration authorities that they have both been co-habiting with each other for at least 24 months, prior to application.
  • The applicant must demonstrate to the immigration authorities that the UK citizen is earning (and/or have savings of) a certain amount of money to demonstrate they can maintain themselves and their family without recourse to public funds.
  • The applicant must demonstrate to the immigration authorities that they have suitable accommodation.
